Menstrual Cramp Relief: Quick Tips to Banish Pain Fast

This post is all about menstrual cramp relief.

Are you going through shark week? If those stomach cramps are putting you in a fetal position every time, I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve to help you ride out your period with ease. Let’s dive into my many strategies to minimize the consistent pain and keep you feeling your best.

In this guide, I’ll offer a range of solutions, from homemade remedies to excellent finds on Amazon. Keep in mind, that what works for one person might not be the perfect fit for another. It’s all about discovering what resonates with your preferences and going from there.

Just a quick note: I’m not a medical expert. If you’re dealing with intense pain, it’s smart to check in with your doctor. The intense pain could be a sign of a possible health condition requiring medical attention.

Essential Homemade Remedies for Period Pain Relief

I have many favorite homemade remedies that have helped me throughout the years. Hopefully, you will find something here that you can add to your arsenal next time your period comes around testing your pain tolerance.

Chamomile Teas

Teas are perfect in the morning as a nice drink to start your day. We all know it can be difficult sometimes to focus and endure the nagging of menstrual cramps at work. It is important to note that caffeine can also cause the uterus to contract more which can sometimes increase pain.

Avoid Coffee

For me, drinking coffee usually, does more harm than good. That’s why opting for natural tea feels much gentler, allowing you to nurture your body when it needs care the most. It’s also important you avoid foods that typically causes bloating. Cramps can be particularly uncomfortable when dealing with gas.

Warm Soups

Have you ever found yourself craving noodles or soup on your period? Give in to those cravings since the warmth of the broth alone calms your menstrual cramps. I would even avoid eating heavy food, if you can. You will want to treat your body with kindness when it is in a cycle that can be very weak.

Heat for Period Pain:

Water Bottle

Heat is the main aspect that helps. Ever since, I was in high school I would get home and fill up an empty water bottle with warm sink water and put it on my stomach area. Sometimes I would lay sideways and even use one on my back at the same time when it would be really bad.

Heating Pad

Now I have been using my electric heating pad and I looooove it! If you were to ask me what I recommend the most, I would say a heating pad 100%! My heating pad is always out and in use for the first 3 days. In the past, I’ve hated myself every time I took a road trip to see my parents while on my period and thought maybe “I won’t need it”(I try to pack light). Do yourself a favor and order yourself a heating pad right now! You won’t regret it.

When picking out the ideal heating pad, consider whether it’s rechargeable or requires a wall outlet, and check if you have accessible outlets for easy use when needed. This aspect will be crucial in your purchase decision, as it will determine where and for how long you can use the heating pad, especially when you need it most.

Another thing to note is the shape that you want for the heating pad. Mine is a belt that has velcro to stay in place. However, I don’t use it that way. I fold the belt “arms” backward and just place the heating part of the belt over my stomach. The last thing I want is to be restricted while I’m on my period. Which leads me to my next point.

Loose Clothing

Make sure you wear loose-fitting clothes. It feels like you are not letting your body do what it has to when you are pushing up against it. Find your loosest clothes and just lay down anywhere. Preferable in your comfy bed with a cozy blanket and your new heating pad placed on your stomach.

Warm Shower

There have been times when I have been struggling all day with my cramps and just feel like I need a reset. A warm shower does that perfectly. Run your warm water and it magically just changes your mood. After the shower, you can get in warm loose clothes and try to unwind for the day.

5 Overall Menstrual Cramp Relief Tips

1. Clear Your To-Do List

Try to have your major tasks done before your period since the worst is having to do something major when you’re in the thick of it. Sometimes that’s just not possible but at least trying to get ahead when you do know it is coming up.

2. Meal Prep Beforehand

Meal prep if you can and are on a budget for those first days. The last thing you want to do is cook and clean when the first day comes around. If you can eat out make sure you do since it’s the best time to treat yourself, in my opinion.

I usually get a spike in energy before my period starts so I’m naturally more inclined to get home chores cleared before I need to become one with my mattress.

3. Get Your Mind Distracted

I’ve found that getting lost in a compelling show or a good book can distract me from feeling my cramps as intensely. It’s like the pain takes a backseat when I’m fully immersed in something else.

It’s also perfect because when you’re alone, just you and your show, there’s less chance of someone getting on your nerves. We all know how tough it can be to keep irritation levels on check at that time.

4. Always Keep Chocolate Stocked

There’s something about chocolate during my cycle that makes it feel like the most delicious thing in the world, and I swear it helps soothe my cramps. It’s like instant pain dissolving magic for me, a definite must-have in my home.

5. Pain Medications

My go-to pain meds are over-the-counter Ibuprofen, but I only take one at a time to avoid overdoing it. I carry that little bottle everywhere, just in case I need my lifeline.

Please remember, that I’m not a medical professional. The tips and remedies shared in this guide are based on personal experience and research. If you experience intense pain or have any concerns, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider. Severe pain could a possible health condition requiring medical attention.
