You might be considering various well-known products containing chemicals to attain this goal, but it is worth noting that not everything we utilize has to incorporate chemicals and artificial fragrances. Below are some great ways to make your house smell good naturally.
Products you might need:
- Essential oils
- Oil diffuser
- Witch hazel
- 4 oz spray bottle
- Organza bags
- Distilled white vinegar
- Cotton balls
The Power of Natural Scents
Opting for natural scents rather than artificial ones comes with the advantage of avoiding potential unknown toxins and the risk of causing undisclosed skin sensitivities. The natural route is considerably safer as it doesn’t involve chemically synthesized products.
Odors travel directly to your limbic system which is connected to your emotions and memory. If you can change the odors around you, you can change your mood as well.
Essential Oils: Nature’s Aromatherapy
Essential oils are a popular way to freshen a home naturally, are used in many ways, and are cheap.
Different methods of using essential oils for fragrance
This aromatherapy diffuser with remote control is perfect for homebodies who enjoy diffusing soothing scents at home. I own this brand without the remote but that would be very useful for sure.
This essential oils set is perfect to create a calming ambiance at home. These specific scents are great for relaxation and aromatherapy. A little goes a long way with these.
1. Diffusers
Oil Diffusers are a quick way to spread scent around the whole house. All you need is an essential oil set and an oil diffuser. They can range in price but all have the same function.
2. Homemade room sprays
Homemade room sprays can be a quick option since you can add a bit to your sheets or on your cloth furniture. They are made with cheap spray bottles. You would probably want to buy little ones to try blending different scents.
For this mixture, get a 4 ounce spray bottle, essential oils, witch hazel and water. Add 30 drops of any combination of essential oil, a tablespoon of witch hazel, and then fill the rest with water. Make sure to mix before spraying anywhere each time.
3. Scented sachets
The scented sachets vary on how some people make them at home. The simplest way I found is buying little organza bags and adding cotton balls with essential oil. They can be placed in clothes closets, around artificial flowers, or smelly shoe closets.
Safety precautions and tips for using essential oils
Caution to use when using essential oils is not to use directly on the skin without a carrier oil. It is too strong to be applied directly.
Also, if you own pets I would look into the risks of using essential oil diffusers since they can be toxic to pets.
DIY Stovetop Potpourri and Simmering Blends
One of my favorite scent ideas to do after I finished cleaning the house is a stovetop potpourri. I grab my smallest pot, slice up any citrus fruit, add cinnamon powder, pumpkin spice mix, and water. I put it on the stove to boil with a lid. Then I set it on my kitchen table on a wooden board to avoid burning my table. After leave the lid half way open and let the beautiful aroma fill my living space.
Natural Cleaning for a Fragrant Home
Cleaning products usually cause the most fear. People say its not safe to use chemicals on your countertops and these products are also bad for the environment.
Luckily, you can make an easy multi-purpose cleaner with just four items: a spray bottle, water, white distilled vinegar, and essential oils. The water and vinegar will be equal parts. The essential oils will dilute the smell of the vinegar. Make sure to shake before each use.
Cleaning routines to maintain a consistently fresh-smelling home
I have a personal cleaning routine to ensure my home is always clean. Follow a few steps outlined here. You can also purchase an air purifier if you need clean air and not really any scents. Check out my review on the Levoit Core 400S Smart Air Purifier I personally own.
Indoor Plants: A Breath of Fresh Air
Indoor plants are a great addition to your home since they provide fresher air. For those of us who can’t afford a home with a backyard and garden, indoor plants are a great replacement. There are many great indoor plants that would be great for fresh air. The most common would be the famous snake plant. They are known as beginner plants and can survive in the hardest conditions as long as they aren’t overwatered.
Baking for a Sweet Smell
Baking is one of my favorite ways to create a warm and inviting smell. I love baking chocolate chip cookies or muffins to fill my home with all the wonderful soft and sweet baking smells.
Conclusion
This post was all about different ways to make a house smell good naturally. You can easily choose any or many of the previous ideas. I personally use any with essential oils, baking, and stovetop potpourri. I encourage you to try some of the ideas you haven’t tried before and improve your home atmosphere.
