The Science Behind Relaxing Scents
Scents are powerful for relaxation since they are directly routed to the limbic system. That is why your emotions and memory are sometimes triggered by scents.
You can use that to your advantage and find a way to relax and unwind with relaxing scents. I’ll list the most popular relaxing scents for you to decide which you want to try.

Different Forms of Relaxing Scents
1. Candles:
Candles are an easy way to add relaxing scents to your home since they can be put on any counter space. However, now there are also candle wax warmers you can plug-in. I have been buying candle wax melts for my plug-in and avoids smoke in the house.
Traditional candles help create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, so I still have some around the house. I always get them made of soy wax since the scent lingers a lot longer. Traditional candles will always be timeless.
2. Essential Oils:
You can also use the essential oils through diffuser or applied topically. My favorite way is to use a diffuser since, I can always change the scents and it’s pretty quick to set up for the whole house.
When applying topically mix with a carrier oil (jojoba, coconut, or almond oil). The ratio is usually 6 drops of essential oils in 30ml carrier oil. However, you can adjust it more or less based on preference.
3. Room Sprays:
Room sprays are also something I have loved to use. My all-time favorite is by Abbey & Sullivan in the Aloe Fresh Scent. I happened to find it in Burlington about 2 years ago. It had the most amazing scent I couldn’t get enough of it. I sprayed it on my bed covers and my couch, as well. I have since bought other room sprays and they haven’t been as strong but Abbey & Sullivan is high quality.
At this time, I believe they might have discontinued the Aloe Fresh one but I’m sure any other scent would be just as great. I have purchased a holiday scent spray and it was great as well. It definitely helps you get in the holiday spirit.
Another great benefit about room sprays is that if you quickly need to get your whole living space smelling great you can spray into the AC panel air filter. It will spread through your whole house.
DIY Relaxing Scents
1. Stovetop Potpourri
The main DIY I make is a stovetop potpourri in the fall. It includes cinnamon and pumpkin spice powder with a sliced orange put to boil.
Then place the pot in the center of your living space. Just be sure to have a wooden item under it to protect your counters and that it’s not in a high traffic area.
2. Mixing essential oils
You can also mix essential oils in your oil diffuser and see what scent you can create. I enjoy doing that since it’s essentially a brand new scent every time.
I always get my essential oils from LagunaMoon. They have always been high quality, so I never strayed away from that brand. Also, they last me a really long time and are really affordable.
I have always loved all their scents except for the cinnamon one, but I feel like cinnamon can be tricky sometimes. It reminds me of the smell of a sneeze, honestly.
Cautions and Considerations
With essential oils and candles you have to be aware that some can be toxic for some pets so use caution. Also, with candles and wax warmers be careful in high traffic areas where they could tip over or spill.
